The word “Perioral” means “around the mouth” and the word “Dermatitis” means “an inflammation of the skin.” Perioral dermatitis can then be described as the inflammation of the skin area around the mouth or lips. This inflammation is mostly due to the development of some small tiny eruptions happening on the area around the mouth. Perioral dermatitis is usually common among young women, however, it also affects men.
This condition leads to formation of papules (tiny red/pink lumps or bumps) around the mouth and lips, and there is also a burning sensation experienced in the reddened area around the mouth. Rashes may appear on both cheeks, on the skin beside the lips and nose and on the chin. The rashes may also appear around the eyes and forehead.90 percent of those who suffer from Perioral dermatitis are women between the ages of 20 and 45 years.
Perioral dermatitis is commonly said to be caused by use of fluorinated glucocorticoid steroids on the area around the mouth and lips.Other causes include, Use of certain fluoride toothpastes, soaps, cosmetics products, steroid creams among other things.Perioral dermatitis is not really a severe skin problem although it can cause one a lot of emotional stress mainly because of the not so good looking appearance around the mouth. It usually appears as small pink or red lumpy spots on the skin around the mouth, they may appear on the cheeks, chin and the skin just below the nose.
They may look like acne spots, but no, perioral dermatitis is not an acne condition. The skin just next to and under each spot is usually pink or red. There are usually a lot of red/pink spots just next to each other on the affected area. Sometimes the affected skin area can become and look dry and flaky. In most cases, the skin area just next to the lips is not really affected, or is much less affected than the skin area further away from the lips.In some cases, the skin rash looks like it has formed a ring around the mouth.
Scientists are not really sure what precisely causes Perioral dermatitis, however, various dermatologists have pin-pointed several factors that lead or may cause this condition. They include:
